Looking North

Last photo from the top of the Liberty Memorial.  This one looks over Kansas City, Missouri.  You've seen lots of these buildings in previous post.  There is Union Station, Kauffman Center of Performing Arts, Sprint Center, Power and Light Building, KC Star Building, Bartle Hall, Western Auto Building, plus many others throughout this area.

New York Life Building

One of Kansas Cities true treasures, located in the Library District downtown.  The block around the library has beautiful historic buildings.  This one was KC's first skyscraper with 10 stories built in 1890.  It was the first building in Kansas City to have elevators.  The Roman Catholic Diocese of Kansas City  and St Joseph purchased the building in 2010 for administrative offices and catholic charities.

Weekend Reflection

Lots going on in this photo but I liked it...  I was trying for those wonderful hanging crystal like light fixtures inside this shop and ended up with much more.  Taken in the Power & Light District.

Taking part in weekend reflections, to see more visit James here.

Wednesday Doorways

Across the street from the KC Library is the New England National Bank Building.

I have been away from the internet for several days and did not realize I messed up my scheduled post (wrong dates).  Back into civilization now though.

Heartland Scuffle

I found this sculpture on a patio between the KC Rep Box Office and the new H&R Block Building downtown.  This sculpture by Stretch is Heartland Scuffle.

I am traveling today and will not be able to visit your blogs.  I have scheduled the next weeks posts.  I will catch up with each of you when I am able.

Power & Light Building

One of my main goals of going downtown for photos in the middle of the week was to obtain entrance into this building.  The main entrance was closed but I was able to enter through the 14th St doors.  I entered into a low corridor of elevators.  A guard was sitting in the middle of this corridor.  I asked if I could take photos, he told me no and there was no way to change his mind.  I did get to peer into the architects office in the old 2 story lobby.  My eyes feasted on the masterful art deco design inside the old lobby.  It has been owned since 1964 by the Shulman family, BNIM Architects are the only tenants.  Last week it was announce the building is up for sale.  I am hoping for an opportunity at some point to get inside for photos.  The elevator corridor itself had amazing art deco elevator doors and lights.

This building was constructed in 1931.  It anchors the Power and Light District but is vacant in all but the first 4 floors.  The building is shown here on the left in my March Theme Day photo.

Muehlebach Hotel II

Most of this looks original although the lights above the counter are new.

This is still in a conference dining area and obviously is no longer in use.

Muehlebach Hotel Light

The historic Muehlebach Hotel in downtown Kansas City was built in 1915.  It was visited by every President from Theodore Roosevelt to Ronald Reagan.  This is now one of three wings of the Marriott Downtown and looks to serve as a banquet area.  No one was in the area when I walked in last week.

Does anyone know the theme for April?

Central Library

This lobby was originally built as a bank lobby in 1906.  This was magnificently rich and appropriate space for a bank lobby.  The library consists of five floors, the lobby houses popular reading materials.

After a buy out of the bank I worked for in New Mexico, I was brought to KC and worked for this bank.  Not in this particular building but I visited this building many times as it housed the administrative offices of the bank.  After many buyouts my department was downsized and I have found my way elsewhere.  I remember special evening events held on these marble floors.

Thinker at 9th and Central

At times I think I have exhausted my exploration of downtown KC, but everytime I take a different street in the early morning on my way to work, I find something new.  I found this piece of art on a parking garage and stopped to shoot it.  It wasn't until I uploaded that I saw this group of lights represented the thinker.  I could find nothing about this art online and perhaps missed the artist on my quick stop for the shot.

I love downtown Kansas City for it's old historic building mixed with modern and the art displayed throughout.  I am once again headed to downtown to collect some more photos of the area.  I hope to get inside some of the buildings that are locked on the weekends mornings when I usually explore.
