Phoenix Jazz Club

This area at Central and 8th street was known as the Garment District in 1888.  The Phoenix was a hotel with a  saloon on the first floor.  The Phoenix Hotel was supposedly a shady hotel and rumored to be more of a bordello.

Kansas City Central Library

First National Bank Building built in 1906.  Opened as the KC Central Library in 2004.  The lobby is a rich expanse of marble which was a portrait of wealth when it was a bank lobby.   There were many people waiting outside for the library to open on this day.

Carbide and Carbon Building

The Carbide and Carbon Building was built during the Great Depression.  Kansas City displayed unusual growth during this period.  Many of the old building I have displayed on this blog during the last several weeks are in the block known as the Library District and I have found my information off the Library District Walking Tour.  I cannot even begin to express how I've enjoyed learning about these buildings for this blog.

This was the first street I became familiar with prior to my move to Kansas City.  The bank I worked for in New Mexico was purchased by the bank formerly occupying the now Kansas City Public Library.  Pictures are forth coming of the Library.  I was awed with this area.

Crochet anyone

When I was younger 20 something and lived in Albuquerque, New Mexico, I was a silversmith.  I no longer have smithing equipment but do make necklaces, earrings and bracelet.  Obviously I am drawn to jewelry, but not just any jewelry.  This jewelry was crocheted.  Now I have knitted using wire and beads and know how much is involved in it's creation.  These pieces were done by Char Hunt, she has a beautiful turquoise piece on her home page.

Zona Rosa Art Festival

Fall brings Art Festivals.  This booth drew quite a crowd.  There were many photographic artist, the things they do with photographs; laid onto glass with vivid colors, printed on canvas where colors were vibrant and then the photos that look more like paintings instead of photos.  There were lots of Sunflowers.

More New England Building

I love the craftsmanship and detail of these old buildings.  They all have the name of the building crafted right into the building itself.

The New England Buiding

This seven story skyscraper was built in 1886 during Kansas City's architectural growth to shed it's cowtown image and develop urban character.

New York Life Building

Built in 1890, the New York Life Building was the first high rise building in Kansas City, Missouri and the first to have elevators. It was one of six buildings built by New York Life Insurance across the United States.  Unfortunately this beautiful building is surrounded by other buildings which makes getting a good photo difficult.  So I am giving pieced photo's today.  Unfortunately the building requires an access card to enter, I've heard the lobby is equally exquisite

At the base of the Liberty Memorial

My recent post were taken around the Liberty Memorial one evening this week.  The area offers the best view of Crown Center and Downtown.  The World War I Museum is wonderful to visit as is the scene from the top of the Memorial.  Have a great weekend.
