The sun was bright on Sunday and Pomona was looking in the wrong direction. Also taking the photo looking the other way would have displayed a bright construction barrier and didn't look good.
She still looks pretty good in outline view. (Next time you find an ugly background, try focusing closer on a smaller feature, like her head, and blurring the background with a narrow depth of field.)
