What is it?

I found this object of interest on top of a home.  I am not sure of it's use or purpose.  Does anyone know what it is?  It looks to be copper.

    It's a fine looking old tower. How old is the building?

    It is on a house, that is perhaps 50 years old. A mid century modern home.
