I was walking my dog at a local park yesterday, it was a cold, grey winter day, but no snow. Normally I don't take my camera with me when I head out to let my dog run, but I grabbed it yesterday so had to take a photo. Although we have had a very mild winter thus far, this is a typical winter day in KC.

I found this gorgeous red door and great rolling pin door knobs at Sur La Table on the Country Club Plaza. I am not sure when this store opened on the Plaza but I had to browse and found too many items I just couldn't live any longer without.

Court of the Penquins

This has long been one of my favorite sculptures, found on the Country Club Plaza. I have taken many photos of the trio but have never been satisfied. Yesterday while on the Plaza I was determined to get a shot I liked. I have two and am asking which you like best, I like the top one lots but also really like the second : )

The Court of the Penquins by Arthur Kraft was reproduced to life size in 1979 after the artists death from cancer in 1977. They were originally 3-4 inches high miniatures. Kraft began his training at the Nelson Gallery of Art (now The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art) when he was young. At 13 he started selling his work at local art fairs. He continued his education at the Kansas City Art Institute and Yale University of Fine Art. After time in the Army during WWII he finished his degree at Yale and in 1946 won the Audubon Artist Society national painting award. He spent most his life in Kansas City.

The Drum Room is located in the Power and Light District and opened in 1941. It is attached to The President Hotel which I showed you last month. The Marx Brothers, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr, Glenn Miller and Patsy Cline among others have performed here.

occupy KC update

There are lots of tents still in occupy KC, but not sure what goes on inside them. During the day I have only seen at most 4 people at the camp, and in speaking with others that frequent the park, that is the most they've seen. Occasionally there is a march put on by those supporting the occupy. Not sure why all the tents or what goes on at night.

This is another view of the Triple Crown taken this week. I liked how the sun played with the tones on the sculpture or maybe it was the winter sun opposed to the fall sun. I originally showed it here. As you can see we had wonderful blue skies this last week although today is gray and overcast.

Kansas City has enjoyed unseasonably fabulous weather this week. One lunch I took the opportunity to walk and capture this lobby art that you may have caught a glimpse of here. Jack, HDP, asked if the art seen in that photo was done by Sol Lewitt. Unfortunately I found no label identifying the artist of this piece, nor did the attendant in the lobby know about the art. When researching Sol Lewitt, this does look like his work as seen here. Good eye Jack.

This is a little shop in St. Mary's, Kansas that I pass everytime I drive to Manhattan, KS. I always plan to stop, it looks like the cutest store. I know I would find many things to like. I took this photo in October as you can see with the mums around the doorway. St Mary's is about 1 1/2 hours west of Kansas City.

As you can see the green, this photo was taken the end of October and is part of the Country Club Christian Church complex. I was lazy this weekend after my drive to and from Alabama and did not get out for photos.

Cancer Survivors Park & Sculpture

On the edge of the Country Club Plaza is the Cancer Survivors Park with this sculpture by Victor Salmones. Richard and Annette Bloch's Cancer Foundations is devoted to helping others stricken with cancer. There are 24 parks located throughout the USA and Canada, each have this same sculpture.

In March, 1978, Richard A. Bloch was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer and told that he had three months to live. He chose to fight for his life and was declared cancer-free two years later. For the remaining twenty-six years of his life, Dick and his wife, Annette, devoted themselves to helping the next person with cancer have the best chance of beating it. Dick passed away in July, 2004 of heart failure. The R.A. Bloch Cancer Foundation continues the mission under Annette’s leadership.

Heading to Springfield, MO

When out on the road wanting to get to my destination, I have passed up many sunsets because I didn't want to lose time stopping for a photo. As we drove into this sunset, I kept seeing a line in the sky from the sun and kept thinking no I didn't want to stop, but then at the last minute we stopped and within a few seconds the sun peak out.

Mammoth Spring, Arkansas

On the drive home yesterday we stopped on the border of Arkansas and Missouri in the Ozarks at Mammoth Spring. A beautiful walking path and visitor center surround the lake.

Mammoth Spring is Arkansas's largest spring and the second largest spring in the Ozark Mountains. A National Natural Landmark, the spring flows nine million gallons of water hourly. Forming a scenic 10-acre lake, it then flows south as the Spring River, a popular Ozark trout and float stream.

Weekend Reflection

A window display on Main Street in the Power and Light District. The tree had ornaments of stars and stick people made out of newspaper. The reflection consumes the tree but I liked how the Harvester Food Donation barrel held it's own. I will be on the road traveling all day and will not be able to visit your blogs but will catch back up tomorrow. I wish everyone has a Merry weekend.

Bartle Hall

Stuck in traffic heading under Bartle Hall, the convention center. This building has 388,800 square feet of column free space due to the 300 ft pylons supporting the roof. This is the largest column free convention center in the world. As you can see it is built over 6 lanes of traffic on I-70. The building was designed and constructed to achieve green building standards and received a LEED silver rating. This building was built in 1984.

Favorite Bookstore

A cozy place to browse a book in my favorite independent bookstore, Rainy Day Books. I have attended many good author events put on by this fabulous bookstore, most recently Walter Isaacson's discussion of Steve Jobs. I always follow their staff picks and indie list for my next great read.

This is the Midland Theatre's Box Office, obviously not in use today. I displayed the Midland Theatre last week, the one with the grand window. I remember waiting at similar box offices, seeing these always brings back fond memories.

Across the street from the President Hotel is the Power and Light Building which I displayed here. In one of the windows I found this terra cotta piece of art by Ben Ahlvers titled The Boxer. He looks like he has seen better days. Unfortunately the doors were locked and I could not venture inside.

There is so much age and detail in this lobby. I know this photo does not display it well, but it really is a remarkable lobby. This hotel is anchors the Power and Light District in downtown Kansas City.

The President Hotel was completed in 1926 during a time when KC was trying to shed it's cowtown image. It served as the headquarters for the 1928 Republican National Convention nominating Hubert Hoover for president. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. It's doors closed in 1980 but underwent massive restorations and reopened in 2005 as the Hilton's President Hotel.

While in the Power and Lights District, actually right across the street from the Midland Theater which I showed you yesterday, I found the shapes of these reflected buildings fun. I also like how there is a reflection toward the bottom of the photo from an atrium.

Midland Theater

The Midland Theater was designed by Thomas W. Lamb in 1927 for $4 million. This building was placed on the National Registry of Historical Places in 1977. It has had many venues in it's life, movie theater, stage shows, bowling venue and now concerts and live events. This building is part of the Power and Lights District in downtown Kansas City.

I found this window at The Garment District Boutique. This is a corner window and the sun was coming over other buildings into the shop. I liked how the sun light reflected through the store. The winner of this contest in the Power and Light District goes to charity. Voting takes place through Dec 16.

I visited this little bread bakery, Fervere, in what has become my new favorite area, 17th and Summit. Fervere bakes their bread in an oven that is fashioned after the communal ovens of ancient Europe. The fire is built on the baking surface to heat the massive oven and then swept clean for the baking. All of Fervere's flours are organic as with all their other ingredients when possible. I purchased the Grain Travel Bread which was absolutely fantastic. This little bakery is only open Thursday, Friday and Saturday. You can see the oven in the background.

A woman in my department retired last week and we threw a party. I was the designated photographer and had fun with these plastic cups of punch. Everyone drank these like they were something other than strawberries and punch.

I drove by the Mayor's Christmas tree at Crown Center two mornings this week, one morning the fountains were on and the next they were off. Above I shot to avoid the street light and below I wanted more of the plaza with the toy land and all the trees.

This theatre was previously known as the Empire Theatre and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007. It opened in 1921 as a popular vaudeville and movie house. I caught this photo in the early morning on my way to work.

The alley I drove down for the Alley Art (I displayed on Wed.) brought me to these doors. I didn't realized I picked up the reflection until I uploaded the photos. I just wish the electrical conduit wasn't right next to the door. Oh well, I still like the door and reflectioned under the bridge. Found in the Crossroads District.

Ok this was not found in Kansas City. I was in Alabama last weekend. Crepe Myrtle is everywhere in Alabama and it is beautiful in the summer and now the fall. I love the flowers, the trunks and now the fall color. I can't wait to see them in the spring.

A Late Honor of Veterans Day

I took these photos last week right before Veterans Day and then in my haste to schedule my post before I left town I forgot to schedule these photos for last Friday. This is my belated Veteran's day post. The city of Rosedale, Kansas honor their veterans lost in war with this monument. Rosedale is one of the many suburbs of Kansas City. I liked the photo with the tree to my right when on my camera, but once downloaded I liked the one below better. I appreciate our veterans fighting for our freedom.

Eagle Statue

This Eagle statue, originally stood in a courtyard of a Japanese temple. It was made in the 1700's in Japan and was in the Japanese exhibit at the St. Louis World's Fair in 1904. J. C. Nichols bought the piece and installed in Kansas City in 1935.

I am not fond of roundabouts, but I realize they serve a purpose and accept them. They have become increasingly popular in Kansas City. I do hate stop lights more than roundabouts The above roundabout is just to slow traffic, but many are to eliminate stop lights so guess I cannot complain.

Seems like all the buildings downtown are being converted into condos or lofts. I have always wanted to live downtown in a loft with all the windows, brick walls, and modern upgrades.

Country Club Christian Church II

I received a few comments about this church using Country Club in it's name. The church is named after it's neighborhood known as the Country Club District. I agree I found the name odd also. I've seen other church names that include their neighborhood.

As you can see in the photo to the left one of the spires (not sure of the correct term) at the top of the center structure is missing. I know 1920 is not all that old but I also found that the church is preserving it's history with it's renovations.

While researching this church built in 1920, I found an article that renovations have started in the week in a half since I took these photos. Many of the details on the outside are weather worn. I also read that the stain glass windows will be replaced. It is a beautiful old church.

Stroud's Restaurant

As you can see this restaurant uses every inch of space, including this fireplace mantel for dish storage. This house was built in 1829 as a two room log cabin and grew as the children arrived until it finished as a 10 room house. In 1954 the house was purchased for a restaurant which to this day serves traditional fried chicken family style. There are other specialties served but plates of fried chicken, green beans, potatoes and cinnamon rolls are the norm. Since this is an old log cabin, the rooms are cozy and there is always a line waiting for the restaurant to open. Everyone is content to wait for the dinner awaiting them.

Country Club District

The Country Club District is just south of the Country Club Plaza, both developed by J C Nichols. This is a group of historical upscale neighborhoods. The area was built in stages between 1906 and 1950. This area goes on forever with tall tree lined streets, deep lawns and beautiful homes.

Meyers Circle Fountain

Named The Seahorse Fountain. JC Nichols developed the Country Club Plaza and this area south of the Plaza. I displayed many photo of the Plaza in Sept. JC Nichols found the center piece of this fountain in Venice, Italy where it had stood for 300 years. He purchased it and the fountain was completed in 1925. This fountain has survived vandalism and car crashes.

This farm is behind my home. Last weekend they mowed the field and above the hay is being prepared for baling. Today the field is full of round bales of hay. One of the beauties of the midwest is harvesting.

Yesterday a friend and I attended a huge Holiday Mart at Bartle Hall and while walking on the streets of downtown KC, a wonderful man told us of a short cut by entering through the KC Convention Center. Upon entering, we found these fantastic lights just inside the entrance of the convention center. I can only imagine how magnificent these would look at night opposed to during day with light streaming through all the large windows.

A group of friends went to see the Tom Sawyer Ballet last night at the Kauffman Center of the Performing Arts. Dinner started the evening, no place special, just a group of friends have a great evening. For several of us this was our first ballet. It was quite enjoyable, good company, good food, good dance. This is the last of St Mary's Academy and College. There are just over a handful of building on the campus and this one I would guess is boarding or dorms. It sits up on a hill and is completely hidden behind trees. If I hadn't taken a dirt road by mistake I wouldn't have found it.
